Welcome to “Tray Chic” – TV Dinners Reimagined

Family Tree Foodie celebrates and heirloom recipes, cultural traditions, and food stories. But warm nostalgia comes in many forms—and for me, one of my earliest food memories wasn’t an elaborate Sunday supper or holiday feast. It was a TV dinner.

As a kid, nothing felt more special than those rare nights when my parents went out, a babysitter arrived, and we got to pick our own frozen dinner—complete with its shiny aluminum tray. I can still remember the thrill of peeling back that foil lid to reveal mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, turkey with gravy, and my favorite: a tiny square of dessert, tucked neatly in its own little corner.

Of course, as an adult—and a fan of fresh, real ingredients—I know those dinners weren’t exactly gourmet. But they sparked something magical: the joy of presentation, the comfort of a cozy meal, and the idea that food can be both fun and festive, no matter how simple.

About the Tray Chic Series

TRAY CHIC is my modern love letter to that nostalgic era.

Over the next couple months, I’ll be creating memorable, easy, and seasonal meals—all cooked on divided sheet pans and plated in ways that nod to those classic divided trays. Think cozy comfort food with a fresh, flavorful twist.

The Products

Along the way, I’ll share some of my favorite platters, plates, cooking tools, and serving hacks—from stoneware TV trays to colorful napkins and clever kitchen gadgets—that make these dinners feel elevated and just as fun and special as they did back in the 1980s.

So pull up a tray, pour yourself something delicious, and join me in making some great food, nostalgically styled.

This tray is my favorite! It is sturdy stoneware and the perfect canvas for a modern, nostalgic vibe.

These smaller navy divided plates are a modern nod to the tv dinner trays and perfect for apps or desserts.

Divided baking pans are such an easy go-to for quick weeknight cooking. This is one of my favorites.
