Description
A sweet, tangy, slow-simmered sauce made with onions, peppers, ketchup, and warm spices. Perfect on hot dogs, burgers, or anything off the grill—this vintage family recipe brings big summer flavor and heartfelt nostalgia in every bite.
Ingredients
- 2 medium onions, finely chopped
- 1 green (or red) bell pepper, finely chopped
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard (I like Colemans)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup good quality ketchup
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or 1 teaspoon chili crisp)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the diced onions and bell pepper. Sauté until very soft and fragrant, about 10-12 minutes.
- Stir in the sugar, dry mustard, salt and red pepper flakes (or chili crisp). Cook for 1-2 minutes to give the spices a chance to bloom.
- Add the ketchup, cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine.
- Simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce is thickened and glossy.
- Serve warm over hot dogs, burgers or grilled sausage.
